The second round kicks off on Wednesday night in Dublin and after the unpredictable nature of the opening stages I’m loathed to throw any predictions out for who is set to reach the quarter-finals.
Having said that, looking at tonight’s line-up, you would say that there is a reasonably clear pick to claim victory in each of the four matches, especially as the games are contested over five sets rather than three.
These four picks would be Newton, Wade, Van Barneveld and Part, who all impressed in round one and all have much more big tournament experience than their adversaries. SkyBet clearly agree that they are clear favourites as to go with this four man accumulator you will only get odds of 15/8.
Scouting around for better value is tough but if I was to pick one match that could buck the trend it would be Dolan against Part, if you backed the Northern Irishman along with the other three to win the odds would shoot up to 13/2, but this really would be a punt, and I wouldn’t be confident on more than the change in my pocket.
I know it’s boring, and the Grand Prix has loved throwing up shocks so far, but I just can’t see any tonight. The favourites are just in too good form to crumble at this stage, at 15/8, I’m diving in on all of them to win.
